The name ‘Pragjyotishpur’ connotes rays of primordial light and, in ancient times, signified the geographic area that spans much of what is Northeast Bharat today. This name has been mentioned even in texts as old as the Rāmāyaṇa and the Mahābhārata.
"तत्र प्राग्ज्योतिषं नाम जातरूपमयं पुरम् ... |" रामायण, “किष्किन्धाकाण्ड”, ४२.३१Honouring the rich and vibrant legacy associated with this name, Pragjyotishpur University came into being on Monday, the 17th of October 2022, with the enactment of the Pragjyotishpur University Act No. XLVI of 2022 by the Government of Assam.
Pragjyotishpur University was founded with a resolve to nurture a center of world-class education and research driven by a cross-cutting approach for overcoming barriers to knowledge creation, sustenance, and dissemination. Each and every corner of this university rings with the rhythm of the true essence of Jñāna (knowledge), Prajñā (wisdom), and Satya (truth), three principles explicitly incorporated in the mandate of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Pragjyotishpur University can accordingly be seen as a seat of learning out of the NEP 2020.
The NEP 2020 informs the direction of academic activities in the University, which formally began conducting classes at the Undergraduate level on Friday, the 1st of September 2023, for its maiden Academic Session of 2023-24. Heading into the Academic Session 2024-25, the University shall introduce undergraduate programmes with Honours and integrated Masters under five Schools of Academic Excellence, and, with due approval from the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), courses in the Pharmaceutical Sciences.

In line with this mission, Pragjyotishpur University aims to build a State-of-the-Art knowledge repository and create digital infrastructure for expanding the horizons of thought among all stakeholders. The University seeks to achieve these goals by generating an innovative and creative educational ecosystem to foster engagement with Business, Government, and Communities (BGC) for an overall constructive development.
Upholding its mission, the university aims, too, at reinvigorating and nurturing institutional and social relationships across various levels of exchange between Bharat, Southeast Asia, and the world on the basis of implemented policies as envisaged in the NEP 2020 for the promotion of cultural pride and entrepreneurial spirit.

Pragjyotishpur University echoes the muse of the famous saying of the Gita, invoking the essence of true knowledge by seeking to create brave, compassionate, dedicated, firm, patriotic, and steady human beings through inculcation of a sense of Aikya (unity), Anuśāsana (discipline), Dhairya (patience), Karuṇā (compassion), Satyānvēṣaṇa (quest for truth), and Śraddhā (reverence) in learners. Thus, this unique academic institution will imbibe in the minds of learners such qualities as accountability, dedication, innovation, openness of mind, patriotism, scientific temper, social responsibility, and transparency.
